Improving skills and capabilities with a business partnering model

Developing a high performance team and culture is a strategic priority for our business. To help achieve this, we are focused on developing the skills and capabilities of our people.

We have designed and implemented a global model for business partnering to provide a more structured approach to skills development. Developing the skills and attributes for effective business partnering is essential to our people because this enables them to work together more successfully to the benefit of the Group.

The model details five key areas of capability and defines different skill levels for each one. By identifying current skills, and mapping these against future personal and role requirements, individuals can use the model to develop meaningful development plans.

The model can be used by anyone involved in business partnering across the Group. In addition to being a useful tool to support career discussions and personal development plans, it can be beneficial as a recruitment tool. When aligned with career development, it can help to improve employee engagement.

The model has been successfully utilised by our Finance team in Asia Pacific to help make a step-change in the team’s financial insight, a key input to the commercial functions of the business.

It has also been highlighted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales as a case study to show how finance departments can play a broader business role in organisations.
